Casi lista para el primer día de la escuelita

I feel like a lot of my work as academic director is done already: finding fabulous teachers to volunteer and getting them here safe and sound (even with a torrential hurricane-like rainstorm). All of the volunteer teachers have arrived, mostly from Boston, but also from Tennessee and California. We spent Friday scrubbing down the school a bit more as well as organizing classrooms and holding an inscripción (registration) and reunión (meeting) for parents and students. We estimated 45 girls, but we have picked up 10 more this week, so our program will serve 55 students now. I can't wait until Monday, although the date means non-stop work for a month. Tomorrow is our last non-work day, so groups of us are going dancing in Sabaneta and snorkeling in Sosua. por Jenny

Even though the courtyard of my building was flooded, and I had to wade through several inches of rainwater to go in and out, I still had a huge smile on my face. I really love this country!

Corinna poses in her new home, El Play. Her host family's house faces this popular baseball and soccer fields. The porch is perfect for watching young Dominicans play sports!

Marioli was given a Sharpie and the job of labeling all of our stainless steel bowls.

I'm hot and sweaty, but I still love to read!

Nina prepares the health classroom.

Ingrid carries the broken desks outside of her classroom.

Tehka labels books and MJ, a local volunteer and student at the International School of Sosua, organizes them into piles to place in the library.

Many mothers and daughters listened intently to the meeting.

Patricia honors the mothers who attended our meeting. Many of these women will serve as full-time volunteers in the summer program.

After the mothers received a round of applause, we all applauded for the lone father (and only man!) who attended the reunión.

Joy and Becky, a local volunteer who will tutor students throughout the school year, make sure we have the girls' names and addresses. Gunther, a documentary film maker, came to videotape the meeting as well.
